Volker Koch started his career with an industrial apprenticeship in
electrical engineering. Afterwards, he studied at universities in
Paderborn (Germany), Waterloo (Canada), and Karlsruhe (Germany). In
2001, he received his MSc degree in electrical engineering and information technology
from the University of Karlsruhe. His area of specialization was
biomedical engineering. In 2004 he obtained a master’s degree in management, in 2007 a PhD for his thesis in the area of
biomedical signal processing, and in 2010 the Certificate of
Teaching Ability, all from ETH Zurich (Switzerland). He worked at several institutions, including the University of
Waterloo (Canada), a Fraunhofer Institute (Germany), Mitsubishi Electric
Corporation (Japan), MIT (USA), Stanford University
(USA), the Signal and Information Processing Lab of ETH Zurich
(Switzerland), the RIKEN Brain Science
Institute (Japan), and the VA Palo Alto Rehabilitation R&D
Center/Stanford University (USA). Volker Koch is now a professor of biomedical engineering at the Bern University of
Applied Sciences (Switzerland) and Deputy Program Director of the MSc in
Biomedical Engineering Program at the University of Bern. His current
research interests are in the fields of electronic healthcare,
electronic implants, and multi-sensor measurements. Volker Koch is
Secretary, Treasurer, and Educational Activities Officer of the IEEE
Switzerland Section, Chair of the Swiss IEEE EMBS Chapter, and Treasurer of
the Swiss IEEE Education Chapter. He is a member of the Swiss Society
for Biomedical Engineering, the Swiss Medical Cluster, and the
Biomedical Engineering Club of the University of Bern.
