Volker M. Koch started his career with an industrial apprenticeship in
electrical engineering. Afterwards, he studied at universities in
Paderborn (Germany), Waterloo (Canada), and Karlsruhe (Germany). He received his MSc degree in electrical engineering and information technology
from the University of Karlsruhe in 2001. His area of specialization was
biomedical engineering. He obtained a master’s degree in management
in 2004, a PhD in
biomedical signal processing in 2007, and the Certificate of
Teaching Ability in Electrical Engineering in 2010, all from ETH Zurich (Switzerland).
He worked at several institutions, including the University of
Waterloo (Canada), a Fraunhofer Institute (Germany), Mitsubishi Electric
Corporation (Japan), MIT (USA), Stanford University (USA), the Signal
and Information Processing Lab of ETH Zurich (Switzerland), the RIKEN
Brain Science Institute (Japan), the VA Palo Alto Rehabilitation R&D
Center/Stanford University (USA), HTA Lucerne (Switzerland), and AWK
Group AG (Switzerland). He is now a professor at the Biomedical Engineering Lab, Bern
University of Applied Sciences (Switzerland), and Deputy Program Director
of the MSc in Biomedical Engineering Program at the University of Bern.
In this program, he is also responsible for the electronic implants
major.
Prof. Koch is
Chair of the Swiss IEEE EMBS Chapter, Vice Chair
and Educational Activities
Officer of the IEEE Switzerland Section, and member of the Executive
Board of the Swiss Society for Biomedical Engineering.
